How to set up an eSIM in Thailand

eSIM activation works the same way across all carriers. The process takes under 5 minutes on a compatible phone.

  1. Confirm eSIM compatibility

Your phone must support eSIM. Most phones released after 2020 do, including iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later. Check Settings for an eSIM or digital SIM option.

  2. Check your phone is carrier-unlocked

Some carriers lock phones to their network. If you bought your phone on contract or from a carrier store, contact them to unlock it before your trip. eSIMs from third-party providers will not work on a locked device.

  3. Purchase your Thailand eSIM plan 1-30 days before your trip

Buy from HelloRoam, Airalo, Holafly, or another provider listed above. You can purchase 1 to 30 days before departure. Choose a plan that covers your intended stay. You receive a QR code by email within minutes of purchase.

  4. Scan the QR code

Go to Settings > Mobile / Cellular > Add eSIM (or Add Data Plan). Point your camera at the QR code. The eSIM profile installs in about 60 seconds.

  5. Activate on arrival in Thailand

Most plans activate when you land. Set the eSIM as your primary data line in Settings. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid unexpected charges. Run a speed test to confirm you are connected.

Before you flyDownload the QR code and provider app to your phone while on your home Wi-Fi. Some eSIM profiles require an internet connection to install, and airport Wi-Fi can be slow or require you to log in first.

eSIM notes for Thailand

Thailand has three carriers: AIS (largest, best coverage), True (formerly DTAC, merged), and TrueMove H. AIS is the recommended choice for travelers heading outside Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) both have AIS, True, and TrueMove counters in arrivals. No passport copy or registration required beyond showing your passport.

Local tipAt Suvarnabhumi Airport, the AIS counter is on the arrivals floor (B2) near exit 4. Tourist SIM packages with 15 GB for 8 days cost 299 THB ($8) including voice calls. The process takes under 10 minutes. At Don Mueang, AIS and True counters are in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. For top-ups, any 7-Eleven sells AIS credit.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya all get strong 4G LTE with consistent 30-80 Mbps speeds. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Phi Phi have good coverage in tourist areas but speed drops near the beaches on quieter coasts. Koh Tao has reasonable AIS coverage in Mae Haad but weaker signal on the east side of the island. The north, including Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son province, has AIS as the clear leader. Remote hill tribe villages and jungle trekking routes above 800 meters elevation will have weak or no signal from any carrier.

Coverage noteeSIM Thailand uses AIS network. 4G LTE across Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, and most resort islands.

Local AIS tourist SIM at Suvarnabhumi is very affordable and includes voice calls. eSIM makes sense for short 3-5 day trips or travelers who want to arrive connected without standing in the airport queue.

Things to know before you buy

  • Travel eSIMs in Thailand are data-only. Voice calls and SMS go through your home SIM or a VoIP app like WhatsApp.
  • eSIM plans do not include a local Thailand phone number. If you need to call local numbers (hotels, taxi companies), use a VoIP app or buy a physical local SIM.
  • 5G is available in Thailand's major cities. HelloRoam includes 5G access in all plans at no extra charge. Other providers may throttle to 4G LTE.
  • Most international eSIM providers do not support calls or SMS in Thailand. Keep your home SIM active in dual-SIM mode for those functions.
