How to Check if Your Phone Has eSIM
Before buying an eSIM plan, confirm your device supports it. The fastest check works on any phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID number. An EID (Embedded Identity Document number) means the phone has an eSIM chip. No EID means no eSIM.
Check on iPhone
- 1Open Settings
- 2Tap General, then tap About
- 3Scroll to find "EID". If listed, your iPhone has eSIM.
- 4Alternatively: Settings > Cellular > look for "Add eSIM"
Check on Android
- 1Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager
- 2Pixel: Settings > Network and internet > SIMs
- 3Look for "Add digital SIM" or "Download SIM"
- 4Or dial *#06# and look for an EID in the result
Apple iPhone: Every eSIM Model
Apple introduced eSIM with the iPhone XS in September 2018. Every iPhone released since then supports eSIM. iPhone 14 and later US models removed the physical SIM tray entirely, making eSIM the only option for American buyers.

Samsung Galaxy: eSIM Supported Models
Samsung began adding eSIM to its flagship S series with the Galaxy S20 in early 2020. The foldable Z Fold and Z Flip lines got eSIM from the third generation in 2021. Mid-range Galaxy A phones added eSIM with the A54 in 2023. Budget A-series phones below the A54 still use physical SIM only.
A key complication with Samsung: the same model number may include or exclude eSIM depending on the region. South Korean domestic variants and some Asian market models consistently lack eSIM even when the identical hardware in the US or Europe includes it. Always check the spec sheet for your specific model number, not just the marketing name.

Google Pixel: eSIM Support by Model
Google added eSIM to the Pixel 3a in 2019, one year before most Android competitors. Every Pixel phone released since then supports eSIM. From Pixel 7a and Pixel 8 onward, Google Pixels support dual eSIM, meaning two eSIM profiles can run at the same time with no physical SIM needed.
Google Pixels are generally sold unlocked directly from Google or the Google Store, which means carrier lock is less common than on Samsung or iPhone bought through a carrier. Carrier-purchased Pixels (from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) may be locked for the first year of ownership.
| Model | Year | eSIM | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 3a / 3a XL | 2019 | First Pixel with eSIM, though limited to specific carriers at launch. | |
| Pixel 4 / 4 XL | 2019 | eSIM fully supported. | |

| Pixel 10 / 10 Pro / 10 Pro Fold | 2026 | eSIM + nano SIM. Full dual eSIM support confirmed. |
Other Brands: Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei
eSIM support outside Apple, Samsung, and Google is inconsistent. Most flagship phones from Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi include eSIM in their global variants, but mid-range and budget models often do not. Huawei phones face additional complications from US trade restrictions that affect eSIM activation even on hardware-capable devices.

Carrier Lock: The Other Compatibility Problem
Having an eSIM chip does not guarantee you can use a travel eSIM provider. Carrier-locked phones reject eSIM profiles from any carrier other than the one they are locked to. This is a separate issue from hardware compatibility.
Phones most likely to be carrier-locked: iPhones purchased through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon on a payment plan, Samsung Galaxy phones purchased from a US carrier, and any phone described as "carrier subsidized" or sold at a discount through a carrier promotion.
Phones least likely to be carrier-locked: iPhones purchased at full price from Apple, unlocked Android phones bought directly from Google or the manufacturer, and any phone sold outside the US and Canada where carrier locking is less common or legally restricted.
How to check lock status
iPhone: Settings > General > About > scroll to "Carrier Lock". "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked.
Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager. Some models show lock status here.
Any phone: Insert a SIM from a different carrier. If it works, the phone is unlocked.
How to get unlocked
Contact your carrier and request an unlock. Eligible requirements: device fully paid off, account in good standing, active for 40+ days.
AT&T: request online at att.com or call 611. Usually processed in 24 hours.
T-Mobile: request via account settings or by calling 611. Approved within 2 business days.
Verizon: devices unlock automatically when paid off. Contact support if still locked.
Phones That Do Not Support eSIM
If your phone is on this list, you need a physical SIM card for travel. There is no workaround: eSIM requires hardware support built into the phone at the factory.
All iPhones before XS
Examples: iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, and all earlier models
Alternative: Buy a local SIM card at your destination airport or use carrier roaming.
Budget Android phones under $300
Examples: Samsung Galaxy A25, A15, A05; Motorola Moto G Play, G Pure; most Alcatel, Blu, TCL devices
Alternative: Physical SIM only. Buy a tourist SIM on arrival.
Samsung Galaxy A-series below A54
Examples: Galaxy A53, A52, A42, A32, A22, A13, A12, and all older A-series
Alternative: These models use physical SIM only. Insert a local SIM card for travel data.
Chinese domestic Android variants
Examples: Xiaomi Mi, Redmi, POCO with Chinese firmware; OnePlus sold in China; Oppo China variants
Alternative: International variants of these same phones support eSIM. The Chinese domestic version does not.
Most Nokia and HMD phones
Examples: Nokia G10, G20, G50, XR20, and most other Nokia models through 2024
Alternative: Nokia focuses on budget devices that typically omit eSIM. Physical SIM only.

eSIM Phone Compatibility FAQ
How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?
On iPhone: go to Settings > General > About and scroll to "EID". If an EID number is listed, your iPhone has an eSIM chip. You can also go to Settings > Cellular and look for "Add eSIM". On Android: go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs (Pixel). Look for an option to add a digital SIM or download a SIM. Alternatively, dial *#06# on any phone. If an EID number appears in the result, the phone has an eSIM chip.
Why does my Samsung Galaxy not show an eSIM option?
Several Samsung variants lack eSIM even when the same model number supports it in other markets. The most common reasons are: the phone was sold in a market that does not include eSIM (particularly South Korea and some Asian markets), the phone is a carrier-specific variant with eSIM disabled, or the phone is an older Galaxy A-series model below the A54. Check your phone's model number against Samsung's official specification page for your region.
Can a carrier-locked phone use any eSIM?
No. A carrier-locked phone only accepts eSIM profiles from the carrier it is locked to. To use a travel eSIM from HelloRoam, Airalo, or any other third-party provider, your phone must be unlocked. Contact your home carrier and request an unlock. This is usually free if your phone is paid off and your account is in good standing. The unlock process takes 24 to 72 hours.
Do Xiaomi phones support eSIM?
Xiaomi phones sold as global variants (purchased outside mainland China) support eSIM from the Xiaomi 12 series onward. Xiaomi 14, 14 Ultra, 13, 13 Pro, and 12 Pro global versions all include eSIM. Chinese domestic versions of these same phones use physical SIM cards only and do not support eSIM due to local regulatory requirements.
Is the Google Pixel 9 eSIM compatible?
Yes. All Google Pixel 9 models (Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold) support dual eSIM, meaning two eSIM profiles can be active simultaneously. Pixel 9 phones work with Google Fi eSIM and all major third-party eSIM providers. The eSIM option is in Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs.
What phones are eSIM-only with no physical SIM slot?
As of 2026, the following phones are eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray when purchased in the United States and Canada: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 (all models), and iPhone 16 (all models). International versions of these same phones retain the physical SIM slot. No Android manufacturer has yet released an eSIM-only phone for the mass market in major markets outside the US.
Does iPhone 15 support eSIM?
Yes. iPhone 15 and later models support eSIM. In the US and Canada, iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only with no physical SIM slot. All iPhone 15 models support dual eSIM, meaning you can have two active eSIM profiles simultaneously.
How do I set up eSIM on Samsung Galaxy S24?
Go to Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager, then Add eSIM. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider. Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra all support eSIM alongside a physical nano-SIM.
Is Google Pixel 9 compatible with eSIM?
Yes. Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold all support eSIM. Google has supported eSIM since the Pixel 3a in 2019. Pixel 9 supports dual SIM with one eSIM and one physical nano-SIM, or two eSIMs active simultaneously.
