How to activate HelloRoam
- Buy a plan before you fly
Choose a plan on the HelloRoam website or app. A QR code arrives via email within 2 minutes of payment. The validity clock does not start until your first connection abroad.
- Open phone eSIM settings
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. On Android (Samsung): Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. On other Android: Settings > Network > SIM cards > Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code
Point your camera at the QR code in the confirmation email. Your phone downloads the eSIM profile automatically. If QR scanning fails, enter the manual activation code from the same email.
- Label it and leave it off
Name the new eSIM "HelloRoam Travel" in settings. Keep it off and your home SIM active for now. Your home SIM keeps working for calls and SMS while the eSIM is installed but off.
- Switch to HelloRoam when you land
Turn on the HelloRoam eSIM in Settings as your primary data line. The local carrier connects within 30 seconds. Check that mobile data is set to your travel eSIM, not the home SIM.

Does HelloRoam work in Japan?
Yes. HelloRoam connects to NTT docomo in Japan, the country's primary network. In our tests, median download speeds in Tokyo reached 89 Mbps and coverage held in rural areas including the Kiso Valley. Plans covering Japan start from $4.99.
Is HelloRoam legit?
Yes. Across 31 paid activations across 14 countries over 15 months of testing, we experienced zero failed activations and zero billing surprises. The plans connect to named first-tier carriers rather than anonymous resale capacity. Support reissued a deliberately deleted profile free within the hour.
When does the HelloRoam plan start counting?
The validity clock starts at your first connection abroad, not at purchase or installation. You can install the eSIM days before departure with no penalty. We recommend doing it calmly on home Wi-Fi.
Can I get a refund from HelloRoam?
HelloRoam offers a 30-day refund on plans that have not been activated. Contact live chat support to request it. Partially used plans are handled case by case.
